My name is Blanca Alcañiz and I am the person behind this project, where I design and create your pieces in an ethical and sustainable way. Spoon or fork? It came about in a beautiful and spontaneous way when I was still studying. One day, the craftsman I admire most, my father, gave the three women in the house some bracelets that he had made himself from old forks. Of the three of us, I was the only one who was interested in how he had made them, because just as my sister and my mother are identical, I am like my father. One of the qualities I have inherited from him is creativity and a love of making things with my hands, which he passed on to me and which led me to embark on this project.
What began as a hobby and a way to spend time with my father became Spoon or fork? and together we created the first pieces. He taught me the main techniques for working with cutlery, with a forge, hammer and anvil (as a good blacksmith, like him, would do). The hours spent in that workshop in Alcañiz, my hometown, gradually turned into something bigger. I gave it a name, created a blog, and began to participate in the first markets sporadically. Since I couldn't make a living from it, at that time it was just an escape from a life that didn't completely fulfil me.
After taking my first big trip to Thailand in 2013, I returned home feeling inspired by everything I had experienced, full of enthusiasm and with great ambitions for the future. For the first time, I decided to commit to this project and pursue my dream. I started working at the summer markets in Menorca, an island that has given me so much, both professionally and personally.
The experience of working for myself, feeling the excitement of doing something new and committing to what I believed in was very rewarding; but it was only the beginning, there was a lot of work ahead.
A few years later, during a trip to India in 2016, I learned from authentic Indian jewellers how to set stones in my pieces and decorate them using different jewellery techniques. India opened up a world of possibilities, and I brought back semi-precious stones, tools and materials with which I continued working. The following year, I continued my jewellery training in Menorca, and with this new knowledge I have been able to bring the designs you see here to life. Throughout all these years, the learning process has been constant, because exercising our knowledge is a task that must not be neglected, evolving step by step to become the person we want to be.
Entrepreneurship requires a lot of time, attention, knowledge and constant improvement. That is why, day by day, this project that started as a hobby continues to grow and has become my lifestyle. Through my creations and my project, I try to reflect my way of feeling and living life, my purpose. I am grateful for the moment when my father decided to give us those bracelets, which inspired me to create my personal and professional project.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me from the beginning, thank you to everyone who believes in me and my project. Without you, none of this would be possible.
