About me

The essence of this creative project is Recover, Recycle and Reuse, modifying the functionality of everyday objects such as cutlery, in this case antique cutlery. Cutlery that has become obsolete due to the materials with which it was created—silver, nickel silver, and brass—but which retains its great aesthetic potential, as cutlery used to be made with great taste and style.

All Spoon or Fork pieces are unique, consciously created using artisanal processes that make them special and authentic, just like each one of us. This is the brand message All Cuchara and Tenedor pieces share a common symbolism that represents the essence of connecting with their values: the appreciation of handmade items, recycling, the pursuit of sustainability, and respect for the environment. They generate an impact that encourages us to live with an awakened conscience and promotes the importance of awareness in our consumption.

One of the stages of creation that I enjoy most is searching for raw materials. Rummaging through flea markets and antique shops where I find treasures, real jewels steeped in history. Some of them were decorated with floral details, filigree or engraved with the initials of the family to which they belonged; all of them made from different materials that conceal unknown stories. Due to their uncertain past, before beginning the process of manipulation, I perform a ritual so that all future pieces have a new soul without losing their previous experiences, giving thanks and asking permission to modify them.

Little by little, the designs are becoming more personal and genuine, representing beauty in everyday life in a quest for well-being and calm. The minimalist lines reflect a slow lifestyle, greatly inspired by the sea and nature, combined with a passion for functional and handcrafted design, creating a business. responsible and conscientious.

My name is Blanca Alcañiz and I am the person behind this project, where I design and create your pieces in an ethical and sustainable way. Spoon or fork? It came about in a beautiful and spontaneous way when I was still studying. One day, the craftsman I admire most, my father, gave the three women in the house some bracelets that he had made himself from old forks. Of the three of us, I was the only one who was interested in how he had made them, because just as my sister and my mother are identical, I am like my father. One of the qualities I have inherited from him is creativity and a love of making things with my hands, which he passed on to me and which led me to embark on this project.

What began as a hobby and a way to spend time with my father became Spoon or fork? and together we created the first pieces. He taught me the main techniques for working with cutlery, with a forge, hammer and anvil (as a good blacksmith, like him, would do). The hours spent in that workshop in Alcañiz, my hometown, gradually turned into something bigger. I gave it a name, created a blog, and began to participate in the first markets sporadically. Since I couldn't make a living from it, at that time it was just an escape from a life that didn't completely fulfil me.

After taking my first big trip to Thailand in 2013, I returned home feeling inspired by everything I had experienced, full of enthusiasm and with great ambitions for the future. For the first time, I decided to commit to this project and pursue my dream. I started working at the summer markets in Menorca, an island that has given me so much, both professionally and personally.

The experience of working for myself, feeling the excitement of doing something new and committing to what I believed in was very rewarding; but it was only the beginning, there was a lot of work ahead.

A few years later, during a trip to India in 2016, I learned from authentic Indian jewellers how to set stones in my pieces and decorate them using different jewellery techniques. India opened up a world of possibilities, and I brought back semi-precious stones, tools and materials with which I continued working. The following year, I continued my jewellery training in Menorca, and with this new knowledge I have been able to bring the designs you see here to life. Throughout all these years, the learning process has been constant, because exercising our knowledge is a task that must not be neglected, evolving step by step to become the person we want to be.

Entrepreneurship requires a lot of time, attention, knowledge and constant improvement. That is why, day by day, this project that started as a hobby continues to grow and has become my lifestyle. Through my creations and my project, I try to reflect my way of feeling and living life, my purpose. I am grateful for the moment when my father decided to give us those bracelets, which inspired me to create my personal and professional project.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me from the beginning, thank you to everyone who believes in me and my project. Without you, none of this would be possible.

White

I create spoons and forks from different materials and alloys, depending on the antique cutlery being reused {nickel silver, brass and silver}, and the method for cleaning them varies. It all starts with good maintenance, because metals tend to tarnish due to humidity, so I am going to give you some tips on how to keep your pieces organised and clean.

RINGS

The most important thing when buying or giving a ring as a gift is to know what size you need. To help you with this task, here is a template. Just follow the steps below. If you have any questions, please contact me.

If you are unsure between several sizes, there is very little difference between sizes, so I always recommend choosing the larger size. Most of the rings I make are unsoldered, so I can explain how to make them a little smaller; it's very simple.

Please note that most of the rings I create are unsoldered, except for a few designs, and I can adjust the rest of them to different sizes, but the design may be slightly altered when the size is changed. With this in mind, if you want a design and it is not available in your size, you can make a custom order and I will create it especially for you with great care. In the case of a custom order, we can make some modifications to the design, such as choosing different stones or sizes, engraving some symbolism or detail, etc.

NECKLACES

The Spoon or Fork necklace models come in several standard sizes of silver-plated chains and another gold-plated brass model.

40 cm | 45 cm | 75 cm

Each product specifies the length of the chain with which the product has been designed.

If you would prefer a different combination with another type of material for the chain of your chosen necklace, please place a custom order specifying the measurements and style of chain, and I will send you a quote for the cost of the necklace with that variation.

In the case of leather necklaces, they are designed with a system that allows you to adjust their length to suit your preferences, with approximately 40 cm being the longest measurement.

BRACELETS

The bracelets are designed so that you can open and close them to put them on. Remember that they are all handmade pieces created from antique cutlery, so each one has a specific size.

In these latest collections, I mainly use three sizes of cutlery, although the measurements may vary slightly depending on the cutlery used, as each manufacturer created them in their own sizes and designs. In addition, the measurements may be altered when I create my own design, which makes all the pieces unique.

The dessert cutlery I use to create the Samsara and Mandala bracelets is usually about 14 cm long. The hors d'oeuvre cutlery I use to create the bracelets is generally about 25 cm long, and the “normal” cutlery, which used to be quite large, is usually about 30 cm long for spoons and about 32 cm for forks. This is the cutlery I use to create the bracelets.

With these last two cutlery models, I create designs for bracelets and bangles that you can adjust between your forearm and wrist, depending on the design of the piece and the size of your arm.

Once you receive it at home, do not be afraid to open the piece to put it on, it will not break. Take both ends of the bracelet in each hand and open it. Once you have it on, adjust it to the height you want to wear it. If you want to wear it on your forearm, twist it slightly so that it fits your arm and does not fall down to your wrist. If you are unsure about what the piece will look like or what size design best suits what you are looking for, do not hesitate to write to me.

In any case contact me and we will resolve it as soon as possible.

I carry out the process of making spoons and forks in my workshop, which I currently take with me wherever I go when I move. The first step in this creative process is to design the piece. Sometimes this process comes to me while I am out walking down the street, when I see someone wearing a piece of jewellery that inspires me, or when I am playing with the shapes of the deconstructed cutlery pieces on the workshop table. It is a process that has no specific form.

I sketch all my designs in a notebook and once there I develop the idea for the new design. For new designs such as earrings, the first thing is to create a prototype so that I can test them to see how they work and what finishes are possible.

When creating spoon or fork pieces, there are several very different working methods. One is more delicate and meticulous, typical of a jeweller – when I work with silver to set a stone or solder a piece with silver – and another type of work is more «rough,» where I shape the cutlery, processes that my father, whose profession has been blacksmithing all his life, explains to me.

This allows me to decide at the moment of working what type of task I want to carry out, since, as in any artistic process, there are processes that are more repetitive and you do them automatically, and other processes that require a certain amount of inspiration to carry them out.

At Cuchara o Tenedor, I strive to create a project that is as sustainable as possible, being mindful of the production processes and making the most of them. I carry out most of the processes using hand tools.

Investing in recycling is one of the most effective and environmentally friendly ways to dispose of waste, and in this project, the raw material used comes from recycled antique cutlery, recovered and reused by modifying the original functionality for which it was created, making the pursuit of sustainability a very important value for this project.

I love receiving your photos, so if you already have any of my handmade pieces made with antique cutlery, don't hesitate to send me one of your photos or share it on your social media, tagging me @ @spoonandfork

Without you, none of this would be possible, so I would like to thank you for all the love I receive from you with special raffles and promotions exclusively for you. This way, you won't miss out on any of the latest news, and you'll be the first to know where to find me, both at markets and at our points of sale.

All Cuchara or Tenedor pieces are created by reusing old cutlery, including different metals and alloys; most are made of nickel silver, brass and silver. There is also a lot of cutlery that has been plated in some way, mostly brass plated with silver or nickel silver plated with silver (the amount of silver varied depending on the manufacturer of the old cutlery itself). This was done to make the cutlery harder, as silver, apart from being used mainly to make jewellery in the past, is a softer material than nickel silver or brass.

Alpaca is a metal that was used in the past to make many antique cutlery items, but it fell out of use when stainless steel began to be used instead. Alpaca is an alloy composed of copper, zinc and nickel; the latter is a metal that many people are allergic to, so if this is the case, I do not recommend buying an item made from this material and would advise you to purchase a silver item instead.

If you have purchased an item and it causes an allergic reaction, please send me a message so that we can proceed with a return or exchange. Do not worry, we will exchange it for another item that you can wear comfortably.

This piece may also leave a mark on your skin. This is a physical reaction caused by our pH when it comes into contact with copper, one of the metals that make up this alloy. You can prevent this mark by applying a layer of clear enamel to the inside of the piece.

OPEN OR CLOSED RINGS

Depending on the length and size of the rings, they can have different appearances within the same design, leaving an empty space between the two ends of the ring or practically closed. Considering that the rings of Spoon or fork Most are not welded, except for some models of the designs. Güah ball, Circle and Güah stone.

If you would like any other customised and welded model, you can order it by sending me a message with your idea and selecting the option. Custom orders

SMOOTH OR MESHED TEXTURE

I only create the reticulated texture on silver pieces or silver-plated pieces, as this effect appears when the material is subjected to high temperatures, bringing the material to its melting point without melting it, giving it a grainy, rough or flaky texture. This effect makes each piece completely different, as the final result of this texture cannot be controlled.

In the case of gold-plated pieces with a reticulated texture, this is because the composition of the cutlery is based on a silver plating over a brass base. The final piece reveals the original gold colour of the piece with this effect created by the silver.

Matte or glossy finish

Most of my pieces have a matte finish, as I believe it brings out the beauty of the material and the final piece, highlighting the origin and provenance of the antique cutlery. However, if you prefer a shiny finish, simply indicate this in the order details section before completing your purchase.

Once you have it at home, it is very easy to clean and keep your piece shiny. I will explain how to do it in the section on Cleaning and maintenance of your parts.
